Steve raced ahead, his rifle leading the way. The hallways seemed to get darker and darker. They were moving through a utility section of the school. Boiler rooms. Electrical centers. Places where students would not generally be permitted to go. The kid was running, and probably knew where he was going. He could possibly have a plan for this part of his attack, he could be waiting around any corner for the cops to show up, ready with a magazine full of lead.

As if lending his theory validity, he heard a shot just ahead. No, he realized, it was multiple shots, as if all fired at once. The kid must have found another victim. He put on burst speed, vowing to himself, this ends now.

He rounded a final corner. An exit sign shined brightly at the end of the corridor, just ten feet away. Doors on either side were checked and found locked. Steve felt a moment of frustration as he pushed on the exit door and found himself in what appeared to be a driveway. The far western end of the school, he realized. Did we pass him?

“Go back! Go back!” he ordered. They needed to start a systematic search again. “Wait!” Something suddenly dawned on him. He pushed on the door again and felt it bump against something. “Cover,” he ordered, and Dave stepped forward to assist him.

Steve stepped outside and rounded the door. His rifle was already at low ready and froze muzzling the body on the ground. The body sprawled on the pavement, clad all in black. With the pistol perched in a dead hand.

“Shooter down!” Steve radioed, glancing around. “Shooter down, driveway, west end.”

Wielding his M-4 rifle, Dave was surveying around them. There was no one else there.

“Who took him down?” Steve asked no one in particular.

“A lot of these punks panic at the first sign of resistance and shoot themselves,” Dave brought up. The rest of the team was filing out the door. With the danger over, their weapons now dangled at their sides.

“This wasn’t a suicide,” Steve said. “He took one in the chest. And I count at least three spent casings, along with…” Seeing it again, he found it strange still. “Along with dropped bullets, not fired.”

Normal protocol was to keep distance from the shooter in case they were still alive and try to get them to surrender. They were already here, so Steve bent and placed his fingers on the kid’s neck. He found no pulse.

“Boss, let me at least check him for booby traps,” A.J. said.

Also protocol, Steve realized. “Okay, everyone back off. Let’s give A.J. some room.”

As A.J. bent to his task, Steve jumped on his radio. “Do we have any LEOs along Church Street, west side of the school?” He seethed in frustration at the delay in response, until someone finally came back to him.

“We have a perimeter setting up one block west of church, and we’re evacuating people from the park.”

Steve had expected an answer like that, and felt like he was wasting time letting someone utter that report.
